Why You Can’t Grow Coffee At Home, Or Can You?

Is it possible to grow coffee at home? This southern tree will never survive in a cold climate, but an African guest can adapt to unusual conditions and even bear fruit. There will not be enough grains for constant consumption, the annual yield from one plant will not exceed 0.5 kg, but sometimes you will be able to treat yourself and very dear guests.

Cultivation Of A Coffee Tree

It is useless to cultivate store-bought grains, even if they are not roasted. Planting material can be purchased from owners of indoor coffee trees or during trips to tropical countries on plantations.

Immediately place the grains in moist soil, not allowing them to freeze. The first sprouts will appear in a month but wait for the first coffee harvest for 3-5 years.

The grains are very hard to grow. The hard shell does not allow the sprout to break through, and even you sow a lot of seeds that have just been removed from the coffee tree, no sprouts may appear. In this case, buy a special substance or tool that dissolves the durable grain cover.

Tip:

If it is possible to choose planting material from several species, stay in Arabica. This variety tolerates unusual growing conditions at home easier than others, grows quickly, and does not require complex care.

Caring For An Exotic Plant

Temperature changes are harmful to the plant. The water should be a few degrees warmer than the environment temperature. If you pour tap water, pass it through a filter or boil to remove salts.

  • In summer, the plant needs a lot of moisture, make sure that the soil does not dry out.
  • In winter, the bush rests. It does not need frequent watering. Moisturize it no more than 1 time per week. In the warm season, be sure to spray the coffee tree daily.

Growing coffee at home is possible, but the tree cannot survive in a cold climate. The stronger the growing conditions resemble the African tropics, the better the southern guest will feel. Its main requirements are heat and diffused light. Neither a dark corner nor hot sunlight is suitable for the plant.
