How To Brew Vietnamese Drip Coffee

Almost every country has its own legends, recipes, and nuances of brewing coffee, which depend on its traditions. The biggest interest is the method of making Vietnamese coffee. Most fans of this great drink know it as a way to make coffee in a phin filter.

About a couple of centuries ago in Vietnam, there was a tradition of brewing coffee with the help of a coffee filter – phin. This method of brewing is so popular with the Vietnamese that it is still used almost everywhere, except European network coffee shops in Vietnam.

But what is the Vietnamese phin filter, and what is the secret of its popularity in Vietnam?

Making Coffee In The Phin Filter

By its design, the phin resembles an ordinary drip coffee maker of small size.

Coffee powder is poured into a special loader and filled with boiling water. Set the phin on the glass, and watch the coffee drip into it. The drink is very thick and strong. And not surprisingly, to get just one cup of coffee, you take one and a half spoons of powder. And one more nuance, for this method it is necessary to buy coffee of coarse or mid grinding.

Step-By-Step Technology

  1. Take a phin and place it on a glass or cup of a suitable size.
  2. Fill it with ground coffee. It will take two-three teaspoons or one and a half tablespoons.
  3. Next, tamp the powder down.
  4. To get a full bouquet of this aromatic drink, first pour a bit of boiling water (at least 96 degrees), about one tablespoon, and cover for a few seconds with a phin lid.
  5. After the water is absorbed, add boiling water to the loader and close the lid.
  6. In 3-5 minutes, the wonderful invigorating drink is ready. It remains to add sugar or cream, and you can start tasting.

Tips From Professionals

  •  It is better to use transparent cups and glasses for brewing. This is how you can follow the process.
  • First, you need to choose the right compaction density. If the coffee is pressed slowly, the cup will fill very slowly. Conversely, with weak compaction, coffee pours much faster than the needed time. Excellent taste is obtained only when the brewing speed corresponds to the recipe.

It is not recommended to add water to the phin filter during brewing or brew twice. Then the taste and aroma of this drink will be far from perfect.
