Café Castelo
The story begins in 1995, when Nikolina and Predrag Okuka, the founders of the company, decided to flee the war raging in the former Yugoslavia and settle in Quebec City. They bring with them an unbounded determination and a common passion: coffee.
Where does this passion come from? Coffee was already part of the family, but it was during the war that coffee became a real vocation. The founder-roaster started roasting and selling coffee to survive during this period and it is at this time that he realized the real positive impact of a good coffee on people. Even during the worst tragedies, coffee is a moment that brings people together and is good for individuals and, above all, for the community. When they immigrated to Quebec in 1995, they discovered that espresso didn't really exist here and that the young couple had a dream, then a project: to offer the unique and comforting experience of a truly good coffee, to share their know-how and passion, but above all to create a large family of passionate coffee lovers.
They made their business plan while learning French and finally Café Castelo opened its doors in 1996, on the 1st Avenue in Limoilou. It is an instant success with coffee lovers, who discover not only the Castelo "Castle" of coffee and the richness of its aromas but also a family that unites people by a common passion. It is by following a rigorous procedure from the contact with the producer to the packaging of the coffee that Predrag, the roaster, succeeds in obtaining consistency and a product of superior quality. He treats each type of coffee differently in order to bring out the best aromas and creates surprising blends whose recipes are known only to the family.
Specialized shops, charmed by the quality of the Castelo family's coffee, began selling their coffees, followed by hotels, grocery stores and businesses that in turn wanted to offer their customers and employees this unparalleled expertise. Over the years, Café Castelo has continued to stand out for its innovation and competitiveness in the face of multinationals entering the Quebec market with their consistent quality and more than reasonable prices.
In 2015, this incessant expansion lead to the construction of a custom-built plant to optimize the production of their various coffees and the development of new products. It is a place where all stages of production have been thought out and respected. Café Castelo also has a laboratory to meticulously ensure the quality of each coffee. The roasting is done daily and they have surrounded themselves with a qualified and specialized team in each department. Café Castelo is a family business and the future of Café Castelo is assured by the two children of the founders, Anja and Nicolas, who have already been working alongside their parents for a few years; they have the same passion for coffee that runs in their veins. It is a family business linked by blood, but also by choice, and it is much larger than four people. Café Castelo is the result of many passionate people united around the same caffeine mission. The Okuka family would like to thank all those people who choose to be part of this adventure on a daily basis.
The story begins in 1995 with a simple passion and has been written every day since thanks to partners, employees and customers.
Tangible proof that anything is possible when you believe in it!
