Sharbo Maro is a member of Jabanto, a group formed in 2017 to make use of Ethiopia’s policy allowing smallholder farmers to directly export and sell their coffees. He is one of a few Jabanto members that has the infrastructure to produce washed coffee. Under his care, the process accentuates flavors of sweet melon, orange, and a floral aroma in this unique offering.

Sharbo Maro established his farm in 2015 in the Mokonisa kebele of Wenago county, which borders Yirgacheffe county. Half of the 16-hectare farm, which sits at 1,850 meters, is planted with coffee, predominantly the Kurume variety.

Coffees in Ethiopia have traditionally been natural-sundried processed. In the 1960s, after coffee cultivation had spread around the globe—utilizing seeds initially taken from Ethiopia—and other countries started to gain recognition for the flavors brought about by washing coffee, farmers in Ethiopia started experimenting with the process. Today, washed coffees from Ethiopia are some of the most sought after and renowned in the world for their excellent flavor and clarity.

Sharbo Maro is a member of Jabanto, a group of smallholder farmers in the Gedeo zone working together to export their coffees. Jabanto’s members have been continuously striving to improve coffee quality through good agronomic and post-harvest processing practices, and most produce natural sundried coffees. Sharbo Maro is one of a few members of Jabanto that has the infrastructure to wash coffee and his was one of our favorite offerings from Jabanto and from Ethiopia this year.
